George Karl is the former head coach of the Denver Nuggets. On December 10, 2010 he became the seventh coach in NBA history to record 1,000 wins. After a college career at the University of North Carolina he signed with the ABA's San Antonio Spurs in 1973. When the Spurs joined the NBA in 1976, Karl began his two-year NBA playing career. His coaching career in the NBA includes: the Cleveland Cavaliers 1984–1986, Golden State Warriors 1986–1988, Seattle SuperSonics 1992–1998, Milwaukee Bucks 1998–2003 and the Denver Nuggets 2005–present. Karl is also a two time cancer survivor. After successfully being treated for prostate cancer, Karl announced that he was diagnosed with treatable neck and throat cancer. He made a full recovery and was back to coach for the entire 2010-2011 season. Karl is also an avid supporter of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and serves as an ambassador for their Hoops for St. Jude basketball initiative.
