Sanders was drafted by the Lions out of Oklahoma State in the 1st round (3rd overall pick) of the 1989 NFL Draft. During his time in college, Sanders was a dominant player and had a season for the ages in 1988 when he averaged more than 200 rushing yards per game and 7.6 yards rushing per carry. He also ran for over 300 yards four times. That season, he won a host of honors, including the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award. In 2003, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Sanders was born in Wichita, Kansas, and attended Wichita North High School.
