David Cone enjoyed a successful 17-year baseball career from 1986-2003 playing for the Kansas City Royal (1986, 1993-1994), New York Mets (1987-1992, 2003), Toronto Blue Jays (1992, 1995), New York Yankees (1995-2000) and Boston Red Sox (2001). Cone was a member of five World Series-winning teams, the first with the Blue Jays in 1992 and the final four with the Yankees in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000. In 21 postseason games, Cone went 8-3 with an ERA of 3.80, a number that dropped to 2.12 in the World Series.
While with the Royals in 1994, Cone won the American League Cy Young Award after going 16-5 with an ERA of 2.94. He was also named an All-Star five times, led MLB in wins in 1998 with 20 and twice led the league in strikeouts in 1990 and 1991. One of Cone’s most memorable games occurred on July 18, 1999 while with the Yankees when he threw a perfect game against the Montreal Expos. In total for his career, Cone went 194-126 with an ERA of 3.46.
Born on January 2, 1963 in Kansas City, Missouri, Cone was picked by the Royals in the 1981 MLB Draft (3rd round). He made his debut in the majors on June 8, 1986. Away from baseball, Cone established the David Cone Foundation in 1996. After retiring from playing, Cone went to work for the YES Network, serving as the lead tv analyst for Yankees games alongside Michael Kay and Paul O’Neill. In 2019, Cone co-authored the New York Times bestselling book “Full Count: The Education of a Pitcher”.
