Mike Eruzione captured the hearts of a nation when he helped lead the United States men’s Olympic hockey team to a gold medal at the 1980 Winter Olympics. As captain of the U.S. team, Eruzione scored the game-winning gold against the heavily-favored Russians in the semifinals to help propel the Americans into the gold medal game against Finland, which they won 4-2. The win over the Russians has become known as the “Miracle on Ice” and is considered among the greatest upsets in Olympic history.
In 1999, Sports Illustrated named the upset as the greatest moment in sports of the 20th century. In 2004, Disney released the movie “Miracle” with Eruzione being portrayed by Patrick O’Brien Dempsey. Eruzione has been inducted into numerous hall of fames, including the Hockey Hall of Fame, Boston University Athletic Hall of Fame and Toledo Hockey Hall of Fame. The team was also inducted into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame.
Born on October 25, 1954 in Winthrop, Massachusetts, Eruzione played college hockey at Boston University and spent two seasons with the IHL’s Toledo Goaldiggers before being selected as a member of the 1980 Olympic hockey team. After the Olympics, Eruzione spent time as a broadcaster for Madison Square Garden Network, ABC and CBS. He currently works as the Director of Special Outreach at Boston University. In 2020, Eruzione authored the best-selling book “The Making of a Miracle: The Untold Story of the Captain of the Gold Medal-Winning 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team.”
