One of the greatest track & field athletes ever, Carl Lewis won 10 Olympic medals – nine gold and one silver - while representing the United State at four Summer Olympics. At the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles, Lewis captured four gold medals in the 100-meter sprint, 200-meter sprint, 4x100-meter relay and long jump. He won two more gold medals at the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul in the 100-meter sprint and long jump along with silver in the 200-meter race. At the 1992 Games in Barcelona, Lewis again took home two golds in the 4x100-meter relay and long jump and recorded his final gold in the long jump at the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta. Lewis was also highly successful at four World Championships from 1983 - 1993, winning 10 medals (eight gold, one silver, one bronze). At the 1987 Pan American Games, Lewis won a pair of gold medals, while at three Goodwill Games, he took home five medals (three gold, one silver, one bronze).

Lewis received many awards and accolades over the course of his career. In 1999, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) named him ‘Sportsman of the Century.’ Similarly, the International Association of Athletics Federations crowned him ‘World Athlete of the Century’ while Sports Illustrated honored him as the ‘Olympian of the Century.’ In 1985, Lewis was inducted into the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Hall of Fame and, in 2001, he became a member of the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. Born on July 1, 1961 in Birmingham, Alabama, Lewis came from an athletic family (his mother competed in hurdles, brother played professional soccer and sister became a world-class long jumper). Lewis attended the University of Houston and won the NCAA long jump title in 1980. In his honor, the school named its track & field complex the Carl Lewis International Complex. In 2020, Lewis became a member of the Houston Sports Hall of Fame.
