Mariano Rivera is a former major league relief pitcher who played for the New York Yankees for 19 years. Rivera is widely regarded as the greatest closer to ever grace the mound, as he’s the all-time leader in saves with 652 while holding the lowest postseason ERA in history with a 0.70 and the most saves all-time in the postseason with 42. He also holds a career 2.21 ERA and 1.00 WHIP which are both the lowest in the live-ball era. Rivera won five World Series titles, including three straight from 1998 to 2000, 13 All-Star selections and won the American League Rolaids Relief Man Award five times. In 1999, he became World Series MVP by claiming two saves and a win while not allowing a single run and giving up just three hits against the Atlanta Braves. Rivera’s most crucial performance that series came in game three at Yankee Stadium when he came into the ninth inning with the game tied at five and pitched two full innings giving up no runs and just two hits. His clutch performance led to a walk-off win for the Yankees, giving them a commanding 3-0 series lead.

Rivera was well-known as “The Sandman” thanks to his ritual of running out to the mound while Enter Sandman by Metallica was played in the background. From a baseball perspective, Rivera is revered by many for his signature cut fastball and his composure under pressure. Rivera is the last major league player in history to wear the number 42 full-time following the league-wide retirement of Jackie Robinson’s number. Rivera was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019 and made history by becoming the first ever Hall of Fame member to be selected unanimously by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

Rivera was born in Panama City, Panama and played with local team Panamá Oeste Vaqueros. In a 1988 baseball tournament, Rivera, who was a utility player at the time, came onto the mound and impressed a Yankees scout despite not formally training as a pitcher and only topping out at 87 miles per hour. The scout was impressed by his fluid motion and decided to sign him to a contract with the Yankees organization. Rivera would go on to play for 4 ½ seasons in the minor leagues before being called up to the major leagues in 1995.
