Darrell Griffith is a former NBA shooting guard who played his entire 11-year career for the Utah Jazz. Griffith also enjoyed a successful college career, playing for the Louisville Cardinals from 1976-1980. He led the team to a National Championship in 1980, scoring 23 points in Louisville’s 59-54 win over UCLA. He earned the Wooden Award as the best collegiate player in 1980 and his No. 35 was retired by Louisville that same year. Drafted second overall by the Utah Jazz in the 1980 draft, Griffith got to work immediately, averaging 20.6 points per game in his freshman campaign en route to winning NBA Rookie of the Year honors.
Griffith proved to be instrumental in the Jazz's success during the early and mid-1980s. He helped the team to a Midwest Division title in 1983-84 as Utah made the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. That year, he led the NBA with a 36 percent three-point rate and established a league record with 91 long balls made. He broke his own record in 1984-85, sinking 92 three pointers while averaging a career-high 22.6 points per game. Griffith was plagued by injuries in the latter half of his career as he missed the entire 1985-86 and part of the 1987-88 seasons. He retired in 1991 and shortly thereafter, the Jazz recognized his contributions to the franchise by retiring his No. 35 in 1993. Griffith averaged 16.2 points per game in his NBA career and after retiring, served as a special assistant to the President of the University of Louisville.
