John Stockton is a retired NBA point guard who played his entire career from 1984-2003 with the Utah Jazz. During his career, the Jazz never missed the playoffs and made it to the NBA Finals in back-to-back seasons in 1996-1997 and 1997-1998. A member of both the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the College Basketball Hall of Fame, Stockton is the NBA’s all-time leader in assists with 15,806 and steals with 3,265. During his 19 years in the league, Stockton failed to play in just 22 games.
He led the NBA in assists for nine consecutive seasons from 1987-1996 and twice led the league in steals for the 1989-1990 and 1991-1992 seasons. A 10-time All-Star (1989-1997, 2000), Stockton was a two-time All-NBA First Team (1994, 1995) and six-time All-NBA Second Team selection (1988-1990, 1992, 1993, 1996). Stockton was also a five-time All-NBA Defensive Second Team pick (1989, 1991, 1992, 1995 and 1997) and MVP of the All-Star Game in 1993.
In 1996, he was named a member of the league’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team. His jersey #12 has been retired by both the Jazz and his alma mater, Gonzaga, with whom he was named the Player of the Year in the West Coast Conference in 1984. Additionally, Stockton won gold medals representing the United States at the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics. In 1992, he was a member of the famed “Dream Team” along with such greats as Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson.
