Bill Bates is a former National Football League safety who played his entire career for the Dallas Cowboys. Bates earned three Super Bowl rings with the Cowboys, playing in Super Bowl XXVII, Super Bowl XXVIII and Super Bowl XXX. In 1984 he was selected to the Pro Bowl in just his second year plus he was also elected All-Pro in the same 1984 season. Bates was the first player to be named to the Pro Bowl for special teams play. In 1984 he was Bates received the Cowboys’ Bob Lilly Award four consecutive seasons from 1990 to 1994 for his leadership and character on and off the field. In 2005, Bates was inducted into the Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame.
