Former Colorado Buffaloes Coach Bill McCartney To Be Inducted into College Football Hall Of Fame

Former Colorado Buffaloes coach Bill McCartney, along with 12 players and one other coach will be enshrined in the College Football HOF on December 10 in New York City. McCartney, 70, who recently lost his wife, told the media that he had been isolated and that the induction has helped him through a sad and tough time in his life.

Along with McCartney, the list of this years inductees includes former Miami quarterback Vinny Testaverde, Ohio State offensive tackle Orlando Pace, Arizona defensive end Tedy Bruschi, NC State tailback Ted Brown, Texas defensive back Jerry Gray, Kentucky end Steve Meilinger, the late Oklahoma linebacker Rod Shoate, Michigan State linebacker Percy Snow, Baylor quarterback Don Trull and one other coach: Wayne Hardin, who coached 19 seasons at Navy from 1959 to 1964 and Temple from 1970 to 1982.

The stats don’t lie. McCartney, who took over a rundown Colorado program in 1982 is the winningest coach in Colorado Buffaloes football history leading his team to a co-national championship in 1990. He was inducted into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame in 1999 and was honored as UPI Coach of the Year in 1990, Big Eight Conference Coach of the Year in 1985, 1989, 1990, and National Coach of the Year in 1989.

“It’s a surprise and it is very humbling when you look at the men that have been recognized with this honor over the years,” McCartney said. “It’s very gratifying and rewarding. Keep in mind I’ve been out of coaching almost 20 years, so to be remembered after such a long absence was a complete surprise to me.”
