Ozzie Smith, affectionately knows as the “Wizard of Oz”, is a former MLB shortstop who played from 1978-1996, primarily with the St. Louis Cardinals (1982-1996) but also early in his career with the San Diego Padres (1978-1981). Smith is a 2002 inductee into the Baseball Hall of Fame and was named an All-Star 15 times during his career, including 12 years straight from 1981-1992 and also every year from 1994-1996. During the period from 1980-1992, Smith also earned 13 Gold Glove awards for his defense. Considered to be one of the top defensive shortstops in baseball history, Smith held the MLB record with 1,590 double plays and 8,375 assists during his career (the double play mark was later broken by Omar Vizquel). Smith also holds the record in the National League for most games played at shortstop with 2,511.

Smith was a key member of the 1982 Cardinals team that won that year’s World Series. A few seasons later in 1985, Smith hit a walk-off home run in Game 5 of the NLCS, helping him earn MVP honors for the series and send the Cardinals to the World Series, where they were eventually defeated in seven games by George Brett and the Kansas City Royals. Later in 1987, Smith won his first Silver Slugger Award, leading all N.L. shortstops with a .303 batting average in a year that saw him also place second in MVP voting. He is a member of the Cardinals Hall of Fame and his jersey #1 was retired by the franchise. Smith has also been inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, Missouri Sports Hall of Fame and earned a spot on the St. Louis Walk of Fame. Dating back to his playing days, Smith has been active as an entrepreneur and restaurant owner. He has also worked as a TV color commentator and Spring Training instructor for the Cardinals.
