Jason Varitek is a retired catcher who played for the Boston Red Sox from 1997 - 2011. He was a three-time All-Star and won both a Gold Glove Award and Silver Slugger Award in 2005. He was part of the Red Sox 2004 and 2007 World Series Championship teams. Varitek was considered one of the team's leaders and, in December 2004, was named captain of the Red Sox, only the team’s fourth captain since 1923. Varitek is one of only three players, along with Michael Conforto and Ed Vosberg, to have played in the Little League World Series, College World Series, and Major League Baseball World Series. He also participated in the Olympics and World Baseball Classic.
Varitek attended Lake Brantley High School in Altamonte Springs, Florida before attending Georgia Tech, where he helped the Yellow Jackets to the 1994 College World Series title game (along with teammates and future Red Sox Nomar Garciaparra and Jay Payton). In 1994, Varitek won both the Golden Spikes Award and Dick Howser Trophy. He’s the only Georgia Tech baseball player to have his jersey retired. In 2012, Varitek was hired by the Red Sox to work in the front office.
