Gary Sheffield played in the majors primarily as an outfielder for 22 seasons from 1988-2009, primarily as an outfielder for the Milwaukee Brewers (1988-1991), San Diego Padres (1992-1993), Florida Marlins (1993-1998), Los Angeles Dodgers (1998-2001), Atlanta Braves (2002-2003), New York Yankees (2004-2006), Detroit Tigers (2007-2008) and New York Mets (2009).
Sheffield was a 9-time All-Star and 5-time Silver Slugger Award winner. He won the National League batting title in 1992 with an average of .330 and helped the Marlins to a World Series win in 1997. He hit his 500th home run at the age of 40 in April of 2009, becoming the fourth oldest player in league history to achieve the feat, behind Willie McCovey, Eddie Murray and Ted Williams (he finished his career with 509). At the time of his last game in 2009, Sheffield ranked near the top among active players in numerous statistical categories, including runs (3rd), RBI (4th), home runs (5th) and hits (5th).
Born on November 18, 1968, in Tampa, Florida, Sheffield is the nephew of former MLB pitcher Dwight Gooden. He played high school baseball at Hillsborough High School, where he was named in 1986 the Gatorade National High School Player of the Year. Sheffield was picked by Milwaukee in the 1986 amateur draft (1st round, 6th overall pick) and made his debut in the majors on September 15, 1988.
