Chris Mortensen joined ESPN in 1991 and covers the National Football League for the network. He’s appeared on many of ESPN’s platforms and NFL-related shows, including NFL Live, NFL Insiders, Sunday NFL Countdown, SportsCenter, Monday Night Countdown and ESPN Radio. He has also reported on every Super Bowl but one since 1985.
In 2016, Mortensen was recognized for his contributions to professional football when he was named the recipient of both the Dick McCann Award by the Professional Football Writers of America and the Georgetown Lombardi Award by the NFL Players Association. In 1987, Mortensen received the George Polk Award and, in 1978, he was named winner of the National Headliner Award. In total for his career, Mortensen has been the recipient of close to 20 awards along with two Pulitzer Prize nominations.
Mortensen began his journalism career in 1969 working for the South Bay Breeze and worked for various media organizations before joining ESPN, including the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Sporting News, The National, Sport magazine and the NFL Today for CBS. Mortensen is the author of the book “Playing for Keeps: How One Man Stopped the Mob from Sinking its Hooks into Pro Football”. Mortensen grew up in Southern California and attended El Camino College before going into the Army for two years during the Vietnam War.
