He got into the majors with the San Diego Padres in 1978, but spent the majority of his career, from 1982-1996, with the Cardinals. Smith won 13 Rawlings Gold Glove Awards and set major league records for assists and double plays by a shortstop. He was named to 15 All-Star teams, was named a 1987 Silver Slugger, and helped the team with the 1982 World Series.

Known as “The Wizard of Oz,” Smith won the National League Gold Glove Award for defensive excellence at shortstop for 13 consecutive seasons, a feat that, as of 2008, has not been equaled. A 15-time All-Star, Smith accumulated 2,460 hits and 580 stolen bases over the course of his 19-year career, and also won a Silver Slugger Award in 1987 as the best hitter at shortstop for that season. After the 1996 season, Smith’s uniform number (#1) was retired by the St. Louis Cardinals. After his retirement, Smith worked in various broadcasting positions and hosted the TV show This Week in Baseball from 1997 to 1999. He was elected to the Baseball HOF in 2002.
