DEKALB COUNTY Ga. — Olympic gold medalist, Gabby Douglas, was the featured speaker at Sharon Barnes Sutton’s youth empowerment breakfast that was held on Saturday, August 10, at the Marriott Evergreen Resort in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Douglas spoke to an audience full of youth, their families and notable DeKalb County leaders who attended the breakfast which benefits the Youth Leadership Academy. Barnes, who is the District 4 DeKalb County Commissioner, founded the Academy in 2008.
The Golf Channel’s realty show, Big Break, will now include retired NFL players Jerry Rice and Tim Brown, who will team up with with male and female golfers trying to earn tour cards. The reality show was filmed in Puerto Rico, and is scheduled to premiere on Oct. 8, 2013. CANTON, OH. — Former NFL wide receiver, Cris Carter, was recently inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and honored at the 2013 Enshrinement Ceremony that was held on Aug. 3, 2013 at Fawcett Stadium in Canton, Ohio. Carter became the seventh and final inductee following Jonathan Ogden, Dave Robinson, Larry Allen, Bill Parcells, Curley Culp and Warren Sapp. The award was presented by his son, Duron.
Former Broncos quarterback, John Elway, is about to have his No. 7 jersey retired by Stanford University. The honor is scheduled to take place during halftime at Stanford University’s home game against Oregon on Nov. 7, 2013. Elway will become the third Stanford quarterback to have his jersey retired along with Ernie Nevers (No. 1) and Jim Plunket (No. 16). John Elway currently is executive V.P. of the Broncos franchise. CHARLOTTE, N.C. — NFL Hall of Famer, Dan Marino, was the guest speaker as a part of the Charlotte Touchdown Club’s Luncheon Speaker Series held at the Westin Hotel ballroom Tuesday, July 30, in Charlotte, N.C. The Charlotte Observer reported that Marino answered questions for nearly an hour. He was asked about everything from Pittsburgh accents and Miami restaurants to concussion awareness and the potential for NFL expansion.
