LAREDO, TX — Former LA Lakers legend, Magic Johnson, has been named the guest speaker at the 2014 Laredo STARS Extravaganza to be held on Thusday Sept. 11, 2014 at the Laredo Country Club located at 1415 Country Club Dr. in Laredo, TX . Over the years the STARS program has enlisted the help of international figures from politicians to actors. This year basketball superstar Magic Johnson has been added to the list.

Dwyane Wade Signs New Contract with Miami Heat

MIAMI, Fla. — Looks like Dwyane Wade is staying with the Miami Heat. According to Yahoo Sports, to cite sources, Wade signed a new contract with the Heat on Tuesday, July 15. It’s a two-year deal, the second of those seasons a player option, said a person familiar with the situation. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither side announced terms. Financial terms were not announced, though it’s expected Wade’s salary for next season will not reach the $20.2 million he would have made under his previous contract.

CANTON, N.Y. — Dallas Mavericks head coach, Rick Carlisle, recently spoke to a group of young athletes on June 30 at St. Lawrence University Basketball Camp in St. Lawrence University’s Burkman Gymnasium, makng this Carlisle’s second visit as a guest speaker in five years. The camp is a five-day event that draws in students from all across the north country, said Joseph Keniston, co-director of sports information at SLU. Participants represent grades two through 12. NBA point guard, Derek Fisher, is about to switch from player to head coach. In a breaking article at Yahoo Sports, to cite sources, the former Lakers point guard is set to sign a $25 million deal to coach the Knicks. The article reports that after Knicks president Phil Jackson lost his top coaching candidate, Steve Kerr, to the Golden State Warriors, Fisher became Jackson’s primary target and the 18-year NBA veteran will retire to take the job.
