Billie Jean King Named Keynote Speaker at the 2016 Susan B. Anthony Birthday Luncheon

ROCHESTER, NY — Tennis legend Billie Jean King will be the keynote speaker at the 2016 Susan B. Anthony Birthday Luncheon Feb. 10 at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center. Source: Democrat and Chronicle.

According to officials, the luncheon is held each year in mid-February to celebrate Susan B. Anthony’s Feb. 15 birthday, to honor contemporary women who continue her legacy, and to raise awareness of the educational and inspirational programs offered by the museum. Billie Jean King is a former World No. 1 professional tennis player. King won a total of 39 Grand Slam titles through out her career; this includes 12 singles, 16 doubles and 11 mixed doubles titles. Additionally King won the first ever WTA Tour Championships and was a three time winner of the doubles event. King is an advocate for sexual equality and won The Battle of the Sexes tennis match against Bobby Riggs in 1973 and was the founder of the Women’s Tennis Association, World Team Tennis and the Women’s Sports Foundation.

She also is the founder of the Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative, which seeks to address inclusion and diversity issues in the workplace, and the Women’s Sports Foundation. In 2009, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian honor, and, in 2010, was appointed to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition.
