One of the greatest female tennis players in history, Martina Navratilova competed internationally from 1975-2006 and won a total of 18 Grand Slam singles and 31 doubles titles, the latter of which ranks first all-time. Navratilova was a record nine-time singles champion at Wimbledon in 1978, 1979, 1982-1987, 1990 and won the U.S. Open in 1983, 1984, 1986 and 1987. Similarly, she was the victor at the 1982 and 1984 French Open and won the Australian Open three times in 1981, 1983 and 1985. As for her doubles record, Navratilova won nine titles at the U.S. Open, seven at Wimbledon, seven at the French Open and eight at the Australian Open.

From 1982-1986, Navratilova was ranked as the No. 1 singles player in the world by the Women’s Tennis Association. During that span, she played a total of 442 singles matches and lost just 14 of them. In seven different seasons, she was the end-of-year No. 1 singles player in the world and, in total, spent 332 weeks atop the singles rankings. In the doubles rankings, she was ranked at the top for 237 weeks during her career. Navratilova was named by the Associated Press as the Female Athlete of the Year in 1983 and 1984 and seven times was named the WTA Player of the Year. In 2000, she became a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame while Tennis magazine in 2005 proclaimed her to be the greatest female tennis player between the years of 1965 and 2005. Similarly, she was proclaimed to be the second-best female tennis player ever by The Tennis Channel, trailing only Steffi Graf.

Away from the tennis court, Navratilova has been a longtime supporter of gay rights. In 2000, the Human Rights Campaign presented her with the National Equality Award. In 2006, Equality Forum named Navratilova during LGBT History Month one of their 31 top icons. In 2013, she became a member of the National Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame.
