Edwin Moses is a former U.S. track & field star who competed from 1976-1988 and won three Olympic medals - two of them gold - in the 400 meter hurdles. His first gold medal was won at the 1976 Summer Games in Montreal. The United States boycotted the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow during the height of the Cold War and in 1984, with Los Angeles serving as the host city, Moses claimed his second gold medal. In his last Olympics at the age of 33, he won bronze in the 1988 Summer Games held in Seoul. Additionally, he was a three-time gold medal winner at the IAAF World Cup...Moses placed first in 1977 in Dusseldorf, 1979 in Montreal and 1981 in Rome. He also won gold at the 1986 Goodwill Games in Moscow. Between 1977 and 1987, Moses was the winner of 122 consecutive international races (107 finals) and set world records four different times.
In 1980, he was named the Track & Field News Athlete of the Year and, in 1981, he was the first winner of the Jesse Owens Award. In 1983, Moses won the Sullivan Award as the nation’s top amateur athlete and, in 1984, he was co-winner of Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year. In 1999, ESPN ranked him as one of the century’s 50 greatest athletes. Moses has worked extensively in designing anti-drug policies for the track & field community and has served as chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy since 2000.
