Earl Campbell is a Hall of Fame running back who played for the Houston Oilers (1978-1984) and New Orleans Saints (1984-1985). A 1991 inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Campbell was named to the Pro Bowl five times (1978-1981,1983) and was three times named First-Team All-Pro (1978-1980).

From 1978-1980, he led the NFL in total rushing yards and was named the NFL Offensive Player of the Year each season. Campbell notched over 1,000 yards four times in his career, including a personal-best 1,934 in 1980. One of the most dominant running backs to play the game, Campbell was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 1978 and won league MVP honors in 1979. He is a member of both the NFL 1970s All-Decade Team and the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans Ring of Honor. Tennessee also retired his jersey #34.

Selected in the 1978 draft by the Oilers with the first overall pick, Campbell enjoyed a standout college career at the University of Texas, winning the Heisman Trophy as a senior in 1977 while earning First-Team All-American honors in 1975 and 1977. He became a member of the College Football Hall of Fame in 1991 and, in 1979, Campbell earned the distinction of becoming the first player in University of Texas football history to have a jersey number retired when Texas did so in 1979. The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award is awarded annually to the top offensive football player with ties to Texas in NCAA Division I football.
