Linebacker Derrick Brooks played his entire career from 1995-2008 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A member of both the NFL’s 100th Anniversary All-Time Team and 2000s All-Decade Team, Brooks became a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2014. His jersey #55 was retired by the Bucs that same year and he is a member of the team’s Ring of Honor.
Brooks recorded 1,715 tackles in his career and was a highly decorated player as evidenced by his 11 Pro Bowl selections, which included 10 straight picks from 1997-2006, a period in which he recorded at least 101 tackles per season. Additionally, Brooks was named first-team All-Pro five times (1999, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005) and second-team All-Pro four times (1997, 1998, 2001, 2003). In 2002, Brooks was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press, recording 117 tackles and a career-best five interceptions. That season, he helped Tampa Bay to its first-ever championship as the Jon Gruden-coached Buccaneers defeated the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII.
Brooks was a collegiate standout at Florida State, where he was twice named an All-American (1993, 1994) and earned ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors in 1993. The Seminoles retired his jersey #10 and he is a 2016 inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame. Off the field, Brooks has been very involved in the community through his Derrick Brooks Charities, which provides educational opportunities for disadvantaged youth through such programs as Brooks Bunch Academies and Young Ladies Rights of Passage. His community involvement and character were recognized by his winning the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award (2000) and Bart Starr Award (2004).
