Bernard Hopkins is a retired middleweight and light heavyweight boxer who competed in the ring from 1988-2016. In two different weight classes, he won multiple world championships beginning first in 1995 when he won the International Boxing Federation (IBF) middleweight title by defeating Segundo Mercado. From there, he defended his IBF title 20 consecutive times over a 10-year period through 2005. In his career, Hopkins compiled a 55-8-2 record with 32 of his victories coming via knockout. Among his most notable victories were against Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad and Antonio Tarver.
After losing his first professional fight in the fall of 1988, Hopkins went on a tear until losing his middleweight title in 2005. During that time, he lost just one fight to Roy Jones, Jr. in 1993. In 2006 at the age of 41, he won the International Boxing Organization and The Ring’s light heavyweight titles. He’d go on to win or retain his title six times at age 40 or older. His final title defense came in 2014 at age 49 when he defended his IBF light heavyweight title and won the World Boxing Association super light heavyweight title. In 2001 he was voted Fighter of the Year by The Ring magazine and the Boxing Writers Association of America while The Ring also named him the third-best middleweight fighter of the last 50 years in 2011.
