While Dr. Robert Ballard is best known for discovering the wreck of the Titanic in 1985 at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, that discovery was just one of many he’s accomplished over his long and illustrious career. Dr. Ballard has participated in more than 140 deep-sea expeditions and is also credited with finding the Bismarck, a German battleship, the USS Yorktown, a U.S. aircraft carrier, the missing Guadalcanal fleet and John F. Kennedy’s vessel, the PT-109. He also made several important scientific discoveries when he found black smokers and hydrothermal vents in the East Pacific Rise and Galapagos Rift in the late 1970s.
Dr. Ballard spent over 30 years in the United States Navy and is the founder and president of the Ocean Exploration Trust (OET), Professor of Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography and Director of the Center for Ocean Exploration. He has also served as Commissioner for the U.S. Commission of Ocean Policy, an Explorer-In-Residence at the National Geographic Society and a Senior Scientist Emeritus at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
Dr. Ballard has received numerous military awards and over 20 honorary degrees. He was the recipient in 1996 of the National Geographic Society’s Hubbard Medal and, in 2014, was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was also awarded a National Humanities Medal. Dr. Ballard has published numerous books, including a best-seller in 1997 titled Lost Liners. Additionally, he has published articles in National Geographic and has been featured on numerous television programs, including National Geographic’s Secrets of the Titanic and Alien Deep with Bob Ballard. He also served as a special advisor to director Steven Spielberg on the television show seaQuest DSV.
