James “Buster” Douglas shocked the boxing world on February 11, 1990 by knocking out Mike Tyson for the World Heavyweight Boxing Championship. The fight, which occurred in Tokyo, Japan, is considered one of the greatest upsets in not just boxing but sports in general. ESPN ranked it the number two all-time sports upset, second to only the 1980 U.S. Olympic “Miracle On Ice” hockey team.
Douglas was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio and was the son of world-ranked middleweight boxer Bill “Dynamite” Douglas. He started boxing as a child and enjoyed a successful amateur career before turning pro in 1981. Douglas tallied a 29-4-1 record over eight years before getting the title shot against Tyson, who was at the time undefeated and the undisputed heavyweight champion.
Going into the fight, Douglas was a 42-1 underdog according to Las Vegas. The fight was held in Japan due to a lack of interest in the United States. What transpired is now considered one of the greatest triumphs in boxing history. Douglas dominated much of the fight before Tyson knocked him down in the 8th round. Douglas recovered and almost knocked out Tyson in the 9th round before he landed an uppercut and knocked out Tyson in the 10th round and, in so doing, won the Heavyweight title.
Douglas retired from boxing in the mid-1990s and currently trains boxers – both amateur and professional - in Columbus. Douglas is involved with numerous charitable causes, including the fight against diabetes. Douglas is a diabetic and co-authored Buster’s Backyard Bar-B-Q: Knockout Diabetes Diet.
