Tommy Lasorda served as manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers for 20 straight seasons from 1976-1996. Lasorda was inducted into the Baseball of Fame in 1997, his first year of eligibility, and the Dodgers retired his jersey #2 that same year. During his tenure as the Dodgers’ skipper, Lasorda guided the team to eight N.L. West Division titles, four N.L. Pennants and two World Series championships, the first in 1981 and the second in 1988, the latter behind one of the all-time great moments in Fall Classic history, a 9thth inning walk-off home run by Kirk Gibson in Game 1. His 61 games managed in the postseason ranks him fourth all-time behind Bobby Cox, Casey Stengel and Joe Torre.

Lasorda established a knack for quickly getting the best out of young players and during his managerial career, he coached nine players that were named N.L. Rookie of the Year, including Rick Sutcliffe, Steve Sax and Mike Piazza. In 1977, his first full season as the Dodgers’ manager, he led the team to a 98-64 record, winning United Press International and Associated Press Manager of the Year honors. The Associated Press once more named him Manager of the Year in the 1981 campaign and he was named Manager of the Year by Baseball America in 1988. Similarly, the Baseball Writers Association of America named him N.L. Manager of the Year for the 1983 and 1988 seasons.

Internationally, Lasorda coached the United States to a gold medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia and, in so doing, became the first manager to win both an Olympic gold medal and World Series. After retiring from coaching, Lasorda remained active with the Dodgers as a front office executive, advisor and ambassador. He was born on September 22, 1927 in Norristown, Pennsylvania.
