Curt Schilling and two other sources told Yahoo! Sports that they independently witnessed a former Boston Red Sox athletic trainer inject players with the powerful and controversial Toradol for six seasons. Toradol is an anti-inflammatory non-steroid drug that provides short-term relief. Although there are no rules against the use of Toradol, it has become controversial because of its side effects.<\/p>\n

According to Schilling and three other sources, Mike Reinold,\u00a0 an athletic trainer and physical therapist for the Red Sox, was fired after last season for using Toradol to treat players, mostly Boston’s pitchers.<\/p>\n

The Massachusetts board of Allied Health Professionals, which regulates trainers in the state, has disciplined multiple trainers in recent years for injecting patients, regardless of the drug administered.<\/p>\n

“I had a Toradol shot almost every single game for the last 10 years of my career,” Schilling told Yahoo! Sports. “It was never administered by a doctor at home or on the road. I didn’t think it was wrong.”<\/p>\n

Schilling did say that Reinold never injected him with Toradol, but said he he did see Reinold inject other players.<\/p>\n

“Absolutely he did,” Schilling said.<\/p>\n

“It is the board’s position that athletic trainers are prohibited from using injectables,” said Amie Breton, director of communications for the Massachusetts’ Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulations.<\/p>\n

An investigation by the MLB in 2012 concluded that Reinold did inject players at home and at road stadiums from 2006-11. The MLB sent a league-wide memo on March 8, 2012, strictly prohibiting trainers from injecting Toradol.<\/p>\n

While MLB’s investigation focused on Reinold, sources said he was far from the only trainer administering Toradol.<\/p>\n
