BETHESDA, Md. — In the final round of the 2012 AT&T National, Tiger Woods shot a final-round 69 to claim his 74th win on the PGA Tour on Sunday, July 1, at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland.<\/p>\n

\nThousands of golf fans got to see Woods win his third PGA win this year, surpassing Jack Nicklaus for second on the PGA Tour\u2019s all-time list.<\/p>\n

<\/object><\/p>\n

Woods shot a 2-under-par 69 during Sundays\u2019s final round to become the first golfer to win three PGA Tour events in a season since Jim Furyk in 2010.<\/p>\n

Fans had been kept away from the golf course during the third round because of a storm that had knocked out power and uprooted trees, but they were able to return Sunday to see Woods defeat Bo Van Pelt for the win in a back-nine duel.<\/p>\n

“Yesterday was a silent day,” Woods said. “I think everyone saved up for today. What an atmosphere to play in front of.”<\/p>\n

“I remember there was a time when people were saying I could never win again,” he said. That was, I think, what, six months ago? Here we are.\u201d<\/p>\n

This win has moved Woods to the top of the PGA Tour. This win also puts Woods in a position to reclaim No. 1 over the final two majors of the year. The ranking is based on points over two years.<\/p>\n

Van Pelt had nothing but high praise for Woods.<\/p>\n

“I think he’s the only guy to win three tournaments on tour this year, is that correct? On three different golf courses. And he was leading the U.S. Open after two days. So I’d say that he’s playing the best golf in the world right now.”<\/p>\n

The PGA Tour next moves to White Sulphur Springs in West Virginia for the $6.1 million Greenbrier Classic from July 5-8. It will be Woods\u2019s final event before the British Open, the season\u2019s third major, which is scheduled for July 19-22 at Royal Lytham & St. Annes in northwest England.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to play next week, and then I\u2019m going to have to start practicing some different shots and getting used to hitting the ball a little bit lower, a little bit more flighted,\u201d said Woods, who won the last of his 14 major championships at the 2008 U.S. Open. \u201cIt\u2019s a totally different game playing links golf.\u201d<\/p>\n
