Rusty Wallace<\/a>, retired NASCAR driver and current analyst for ESPN, said he would love to be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame after a recent visit to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. His visit was part of a tour of upstate New York that takes him to Watkins Glen International for a Nationwide Series race Saturday, Aug. 14, and a Sprint Cup race Sunday.<\/p>\n

Wallace, who’ll turn 54 a week from Saturday, said, “Not a bad way to spend a day off.”<\/p>\n

“Today in the archives, I was looking for the illegal stuff in the Hall of Fame,” Wallace said jokingly in a story on the Hall’s website. “I didn’t see anything illegal, but a lot of special things. When you go to the NASCAR Hall of Fame archives, you see a lot of illegal things _ ways guys tried to stretch the rules with motors and things.”<\/p>\n

Commenting on NASCAR’s Hall of Fame, which opened this spring in Charlotte, N.C., Wallace said:<\/p>\n

“I’d love to be inducted some day if that ever happens.  But to ask me what that would feel like  – I won’t know until it happens. I hope it happens, but there are a lot of drivers that deserve it more than me that drove before my time. I am sure I would be so honored and so humbled at the same time.”<\/p>\n

In 1989, Wallace won the NASCAR Winston Cup Championship in controversial fashion, by spinning out Darrell Waltrip<\/a> on the last lap.<\/p>\n

To date, Rusty has 55 NASCAR Cup wins, which is tied for 8th on NASCAR’s all-time wins list. They include victories at Charlotte as well as the series’ last three road courses (Riverside, Infineon and Watkins Glen), but none at Daytona, Darlington, Indianapolis or Talladega. Wallace has the most short track wins in NASCAR history with 34, and therefore he is considered among the best short track drivers in NASCAR history. He retired after the 2005 season with a 14.4 career average finish.<\/p>\n

Wallace is currently a broadcaster and NASCAR analyst for ESPN.<\/p>\n
