Former MLB Pitcher Jim Abbott Named Keynote Speaker at United Way of Genesee County Campaign Celebration

FLINT, MI — Former MLB pitcher, Jim Abbott, made a special appearance on Thursday, March 19, on behalf of his partnership with United Way to help promote the childhood literacy project. Abbott started the day around 9:30 a.m. at the General Motors Flint Assembly plant on Van Slyke Road where the GM Foundation presented a $70,000 check to the United Way to help its new early childhood literacy project, “A to Z Learn With Me.” On Thursday night, he was the keynote speaker for the United Way of Genesee County Campaign celebration. Jim Abbott, a baseball Icon, is a popular inspirational  &  motivational speaker. He was the underdog growing up. He was born with only one hand but had aspirations of reaching the Major Leagues.

As a youngster, he would spend hours bouncing the ball off a wall to practice fielding and throwing. He showed enough promise in high school to be drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays but chose instead to attend the University of Michigan. He led the Wolverines to Big Ten titles in his freshmen and junior years and had a career record of 26-8.
