Marty Brennaman retired at the conclusion of the 2019 Major League Baseball season after 46 years as the radio voice of the Cincinnati Reds. He joined the Reds radio broadcast team on 700 WLW in 1974 and worked alongside Joe Nuxhall for 31 seasons until Nuxhall’s retirement in 2004. Brennaman would continue in his role as the lead play-by-play announcer for another 15 seasons.

On July 23, 2000, Brennaman was the recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award presented by the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The award is presented each year to a baseball broadcaster for major contributions related to the sport. Previous winners include Bob Costas, Bob Uecker, Tony Kubek, Curt Gowdy, Vin Skully and Tim McCarver. In winning the award, Brennaman became the third Reds broadcaster to be so honored.

Brennaman has also been inducted into numerous other hall of fames, including the National Radio Hall of Fame, National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA) Hall of Fame, Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Reds Hall of Fame. Additionally, Brennaman was 12 times named Ohio Sportscaster of the Year by the NSSA. In 2009, he was recognized by the American Sportscasters Association by being named one of the Top 50 broadcasters of all time.

Brennaman called many historic moments during his career, including Hank Aaron’s 714th home run in 1974 that tied him with Babe Ruth, Pete Rose’s 4,192nd hit in 1985 that broke Ty Cobb’s record and three World Series titles by the Reds in 1975, 1976 and 1990. Brennaman began his illustrious baseball radio broadcasting career in 1971 when he called games for the Norfolk Tides, a minor league affiliate of the New York Mets.
