A 1980 inductee into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, Jerry West enjoyed a successful playing career from 1960-1974 with the Los Angeles Lakers. Considered one of the best to play the game, he made 14 consecutive appearances in the NBA All-Star Game from 1961-1974. A 10-time All-NBA First-Team selection (1962-1967, 1970-1973), West was also an NBA All-Defensive First Team pick from 1970-1973.

In 1969, West averaged 30.9 points during the postseason for the Lakers, who ultimately lost in that year’s NBA Finals to the Boston Celtics, 4-3. West was awarded Finals MVP and remains the only player in league history from the losing team to be so honored. West averaged 31.2 points for the 1969-1970 season, leading the NBA in scoring. In 1972, he led the league in assists. That same year, West and the Lakers won a championship, defeating the New York Knicks. In total for his career, West had a per game average of 27 points, 5.8 rebounds and 6.7 assists.

After retiring, West was named general manager of Los Angeles beginning in 1982 and, under his helm, the Lakers won six NBA titles. He would later also serve as general manager of the Memphis Grizzlies. He was twice named NBA Executive of the Year, once each with the Lakers and Grizzlies.

West was born on May 28, 1938 in Chelyan, West Virginia and played collegiately at the University of West Virginia. He is considered the greatest basketball player to ever come out of the state. He was twice named a consensus All-American in 1959 and 1960. In 1959, West helped led the Mountaineers to the finals in the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to Cal-Berkley by one point, 71-70. He was named the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player. In 1960, he served as co-captain of the U.S. men’s basketball team (along with Oscar Robertson) that won a gold medal at the Summer Olympics.
