Gary Payton played point guard in the NBA for 18 years from 1990-2007, competing primarily for the Seattle SuperSonics (1990-2003) and later the Milwaukee Bucks (2003), Los Angeles Lakers (2003-2004), Boston Celtics (2004-2005) and Miami Heat (2005-2007). Payton averaged 16.3 points, 3.9 rebounds and 6.7 assists in his career and was a nine-time NBA All-Star (1994-1998, 2000-2003). He won his lone NBA title as a member of the Heat in 2006 and became a member of the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in 2013.
Known for his defensive prowess, he was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team in nine straight seasons from 1994-2002. Those nine defensive selections are an NBA record that he shares with elite company: Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett. In 1996, Payton won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award. Twice was Payton also named to the All-NBA First-Team (1998, 2000) while from 1995-1997 and in 1999 and 2002, he was selected to the All-NBA Second-Team. He became a member of the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in 2013.
A standout college player at Oregon State, Payton was a first-team All-American in 1990 and that same year won the Pac-10 Player of the Year award. His jersey #20 has been retired by the Beavers. Internationally, Payton won gold medals representing the U.S. at both the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics. He has been active in the community in numerous organizations, including Make A Wish Foundation, Boys & Girls Clubs of America and East Oakland Youth Development Center.
