Dick Vermeil is a former NFL coach who served as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles (1976-1982), St. Louis Rams (1997-1999) and Kansas City Chiefs (2001-2005). In each of his three NFL head coaching jobs, Vermeil took teams to the playoffs that all had losing records prior to his arrival. In 1999, his third and final in St. Louis, Vermeil led the Rams with quarterback Kurt Warner to a 13-3 record and victory in Super Bowl XXXIV over the Tennessee Titans. For his efforts, Vermeil was named the Maxwell Club NFL Coach of the Year and earned the same accolade that season from the Sporting News. He was also named NFL Coach of the Year by Pro Football Weekly.

After serving as head coach of the UCLA Bruins for the prior two years, which included the school’s first Pac-8 conference title in 10 years and a win over top-ranked Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, Vermeil took over the reigns in Philadelphia in 1976 for a franchise that had failed to make the playoffs since 1960. In 1978, Vermeil led the Eagles to a 9-7 record and started a four-year streak of making the postseason. Philadelphia in 1980 earned a spot in Super Bowl XV before falling short in a loss to the Oakland Raiders. During his time with the Eagles, Vermeil earned NFL Coach of the Year honors via the Sporting News and Pro Football Weekly in 1979.

In 2003, Vermeil’s Chiefs went 13-3 and won an AFC West title, a performance that earned him another Maxwell Club NFL Coach of the Year award. Vermeil is a member of both the Eagles Hall of Fame and St. Louis Football Ring of Honor. After retiring from coaching, Vermeil became a minority owner of the AFL’s Philadelphia Soul and produced his own wine in partnership with On The Edge Winery.
