Carl Yastrzemski, affectionately known as “Yaz”, spent his entire 23-year career from 1961-1983 playing outfield with the Boston Red Sox. A 1989 inductee into the Baseball Hall of Fame, Yastrzemski racked up 3,415 hits during his career and maintained a batting average of .285 to go along with 452 home runs and 1,844 RBI. He was selected to the All-Star Game 18 times during his career, including 15 consecutive appearances between 1965 and 1979, and won seven Gold Gloves for his defensive prowess. He is a member of the Red Sox Hall of Fame and his jersey #8 was retired in 1989 by the team. At the time, he became just the seventh player in Red Sox history to have his number retired, joining Joe Cronin, Bobby Doerr, Ted Williams, Johnny Pesky, Carlton Fisk and Jim Rice. In 2013, the Red Sox unveiled a statue of Yastrzemski outside of Fenway Park.

In 1967, Yastrzemski was named the A.L. MVP after leading Boston to its first pennant in more than 20 years after hitting 44 homers and recording 121 RBI with a .326 batting average. He earned a rare hitting Triple Crown that season due to leading the MLB in the aforementioned offensive categories. As a testament to the difficulty in achieving the Triple Crown, it wasn’t accomplished again until Miguel Cabrera did so in 2012. Aside from his 1967 MVP campaign, Yastrzemski also earned A.L. MVP votes in 13 other seasons.  Additionally, Yastrzemski led the A.L. in batting average three separate times, in 1963, 1967 and 1968. Yastrzemski was born on August 22, 1939 in Southampton, New York.
