Brendan Shanahan played the wing position in the NHL from 1987-2009 with the New Jersey Devils (1987-1991, 2008-2009), St. Louis Blues (1991-1995), Hartford Whalers (1995-1996), Detroit Red Wings (1996-2005) and New York Rangers (2006-2008). Shanahan became a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013 and, in 2017 was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players of all-time. He played in eight All-Star Games (1994, 1996-2000, 2002, 2007) and was similarly twice named to the NHL First-All Star Team (1994, 2000). In total for his career, Shanahan tallied 1,354 points as a result of his 656 goals and 698 assists.

After being traded to the Red Wings early into the 1996-1997 season, he scored 46 goals in 79 games for Detroit in helping them win the 1997 Stanley Cup. Shanahan in 1997-1998 once more was a major contributor for Detroit, which went on to win its second straight Stanley Cup, as he scored 28 goals and recorded 29 assists during the regular season. He won a third Stanley Cup with the Red Wings in 2002. Outside the NHL, Shanahan enjoyed a decorated international career representing Canada. In 1991, he won a gold medal at that year’s Canada Cup while in 1994, he won a gold medal at the Ice Hockey World Championships. Later at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, he helped Canada to a gold medal.

After his playing career, Shanahan worked in the NHL front office as its Director of Player Safety. He also served as president of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Shanahan was born on January 23, 1969 in Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada. He was picked in the 1st round (2nd overall pick) of the NHL Draft by New Jersey in 1987.
